Ohio! Here we are!

Ohio! Here we are!

Life has a way of bringing us full circle. Recently, we moved back to the east side of the country to be closer to our parents in Toronto. Being near family has always been important to us, and now, it feels even more meaningful as our family has grown in unexpected and wonderful ways.

Two New Family Members

While settling into this new chapter, we welcomed not just one but two new members to our family. First came Angela, a resilient little Russian Blue kitten we rescued on the side of the road. She quickly became a part of our home, bringing both comfort and chaos in equal measure.

Then, the greatest joy of all arrived—our baby girl, Sierra. We named her Sierra because most of her gestational journey happened while we lived in California, surrounded by the beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains. She’s our little adventurer, already at home in our ever-moving life.

Our Ohio Home: A Gateway to Everywhere

Our new home in Ohio has turned out to be more than just a place to settle. It’s the perfect “gate” to so many adventures. From here, we’ve found ourselves perfectly situated to explore the heart of the Midwest, reconnect with the East Coast, and venture down to the South.

For example, we often head to Minnesota for doctor’s check-ups. It’s become a regular part of our routine, but those drives across the Midwest always hold a sense of adventure. Ohio also feels like a launchpad back to the East Coast, with New York just a drive away.

And recently, we set our sights on the South, driving to Knoxville, Tennessee. It was a trip to remember! We were lucky enough to stumble upon their Christmas parade, and what a parade it was—so Tennessee!

The creativity we saw was beyond anything we expected. School buses, trucks, and tractors were transformed into rolling works of art. One of the most interesting sights was a truck on another truck while towing yet another truck. A true engineering marvel! And let’s not forget the tractors pulling trailers of party seats, filled with people cheering and celebrating the season. It was charming, fun, and so unmistakably southern. We saw similar scenes in Nashville, which only added to the experience.

Talkin’ About Tennessee

Speaking of Tennessee, we once found ourselves driving straight into the eye of the storm in Dickson, Tennessee. It happened while we were heading back to California from New York. At first, everything was calm, but suddenly, around 4:30 pm local time, the sky turned an ominous dark. Within moments, there was lightning, a massive downpour of rain, and then hail—lots of it! It was an incredibly scary experience, but thanks to our trusty 4Runner, we made it through safely. That drive is something we’ll never forget!

Looking Ahead

This move, this season of life, feels like the start of something big—a time for growing, exploring, and reconnecting with what matters most. Being close to family, discovering new places, and building memories with our little Angela and Sierra has already made it special.

Ohio may be our home base for now, but it feels like so much more: a gateway to the places we’ve been and the adventures still to come.

Hello and Goodbye 2022

December 25, 2022 0
Hello and Goodbye 2022

This year has been interesting. We moved from New York to California with our household goods in a small trailer.  The journey to California was long, especially with our three kitties, a Mastiff pup, and our baby girl. We drove through so many national parks and saw the true beauty of America.

One month later, my son joined us in California. He is so excited to start his life in a new environment until his bad experience with the school. The school had a lot of rules, even for a three-year-old. Every day when he came home, he was not happy because the teachers forced him to do too many things he did not like. This eventually led to selective mutism. At first, we thought something was going on with his head, but the MRI result was good. The doctor could not figure out what exactly is wrong with him. As a result, our family believes this must have something to do with his emotions. We brought him back to Toronto, and guess what! Kieran is talking again! Look how happy Kieran is with his little aunt and sister!

We are currently back in our old house in NY. It is really cold here compared to sunny California! We visited NYC yesterday and spent a night there. My Mastiff pup, Iris, loved Central Park despite the cold. She gave me a huge hug at the end of our walk at the top of the stairs of the metropolitan museum of art!

I also made a series of Christmas Greeting cards for our babies. Aren't they just adorable beyond words!?

Foodie Me

Foodie Me

I've been cooking many exciting dishes in the past few weeks! This is one of the benefits of living in a big city. We don't have to drive so far to find a particular ingredient. This place has Korean, Chinese, and Japanese grocery stores. The locally-made Kimchi is the best. We also have Costco and Safeway for non-oriental food. Back in Corning, we had no Costco! Of course, convenience comes with a price. Things tend to be more expensive here than in Upstate New York.

The gluten-free dish for my husband
Belgian Mussel Soup
Udon Noodles with Seafood
Beef with French Beans
I also made orange chicken, eggplant tofu, and pumpkin pies. I got more ingredients this week. I will be making fish soup, steak, and much more! I am so excited!

Moving to the West

Moving to the West
Hi, Internet! It's been a while since I last posted. Our family has been busy moving from the east coast to the west coast. It was quite an experience. We drove through many national parks on the way. The whole family enjoyed the 10-day road trip! We experienced numerous geographical changes from sky-high Colorado mountains to Utah sand dunes and from the extreme mountain top cold to the extreme desert heat. We finally made it to our final destination, the expensive Silicon Valley! Our new journey awaits!

On our way to Sequoia National Park

Modeling in Canyonlands National Park

We saw some of Colorado's bighorn sheep

Somewhere in Bryce Canyon NP

Waking up in Capitol Reef NP

Driving with our fur babies and baby girl, we were still able to reach several national parks. I am very proud of our driver, Jimmy! We also had a little trailer in the back carrying our household goods and the trailer tires broke when we reached near LA. Good timing! We had so much fun and learned so much on the way. We will definitely continue our Wild Wild West adventures. Will keep you posted!

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays!

Time flies by so fast. Can't believe my baby girl is already 3-month-old! She is getting bigger everyday! She is almost 13 pounds now! My son, on the other hand, is turning 3-year-old soon! I am having a hard time carrying him around. He is so big now! He also talks a lot nowadays. He's a big fan of big trucks and trains. Our house has turned into his toy land! Of course, both my babies got a lot of toys this Christmas! They are so spoiled I know.

Doing Great

Doing Great
It's been a while since I last updated my blog. I've been busy with my baby girl and restoring our house. There are so many leaves nonstop falling. My baby girl, on the other hand, is growing fast. She's not even two-month-old yet! She's already 9 lbs! Average 2-month girls weigh about 11 lbs, so she is doing great!
My girl was supposed to be born after Halloween, but she made it before Halloween. This year she got to dress up as daddy's little cheerleader.

My boy's first Halloween was in 2019. He dressed up as a sloth. Look! How cute he is!
I also made a memory book for the birth of my daughter and her experience at the NICU. Giving birth to her was quite an experience! Thanks to Mayo Clinic. Both of us are doing great!
The Zhan family is still expanding. We now have a family of 4. If we were to include our animals, we would have a family of 8! On the other hand, our 20 chickens are still alive! They are laying eggs for us every day. I came up with the idea of making waffle eggs. Each waffle egg takes three eggs to make!
Ok! That's it for this round! I will keep updating my blog! I guess it is good to record my memories. It starts to sound like the movie The Notebook. 😊

A Mayo Clinic Visit

A Mayo Clinic Visit
Don't even know where to start but I am so happy that I am still alive and well. Last Monday I was hospitalized for preeclampsia with severe features and the doctors said that I had to deliver the baby the following Monday. From last week till yesterday,  I was on meds and had numerous iv injections on my arms. Checking my arms today, I have bruises everywhere. I can't believe this pregnancy got me into the operating room several times. The doctors here at Mayo Clinic were angels. They helped me to deliver my baby in 9 minutes with only 5 pushes before my placenta got ruptured. Then I experienced hemorrhage but the doctors here were quick at spotting the ruptured placenta and immediately took it out to stop the bleeding.  I lost over 2 liters of blood and thanks goodness that Mayo Clinic has a great blood bank.  I immediately got the right type of blood and the antibodies I needed to recover from the blood loss. What a week! My baby girl is staying at the Mayo Clinic's NICU receiving the best care she needs to grow outside the womb. It makes sense that Mayo Clinic is the best hospital in the world! It really saves lives.
Here are some more pictures of my baby Gabs.

This is an electronic memory book. This piece of memory will be forever remembered and recorded.

Our Furry Babies

Our Furry Babies

We just got back from our grocery trip two hours ago, and now I am waiting for Jimmy's chicken soup to be cooked. Jimmy makes really good chicken soup. I am already drooling. Jimmy also got me a cartload of snacks. I know he is spoiling me!

Iris learned to sunbathe in the hotel. She is living her best life here. She is always on vacation, especially when the cats are not around. She is the only attention seeker in the house!
Speaking of our cats, here is Jupiter and Selena. Selena is actually back in her own home. Jupiter is just hanging in her house, but Selena doesn't seem to mind much.
Do you know which cat is this? Jedie! The social cat! He looks so flexible here. Is he practicing kung fu? I miss his soft fur and his creepy stares at night. 😜
Have I mentioned Mr Marley passed away in January this year? He had an enlarged heart. We think there was something outside spooked him. Now he is probably hanging out on Jesus' desk, instead of mine...
Oh, I recently got a Zhan Family mug from Shutterfly (the one on the left). The cup on the right was an old cup I designed a long time ago. It preserved all our happy moments together!

True Confession

August 12, 2021 0
True Confession

My baby son has been away from me for a while now. Due to numerous reasons, he has to temporarily stay in Canada with his grandparents. I hope we can get more settled so that I can reunite with him! He has a baby sister coming up soon, and he already knows how to say sister!  He is so ready to be a big brother!

He is not the only one that I miss! I also miss my kitties. They are still at our coworker's house. I miss their morning greetings and cozy snuggles at night. Fun facts: one of my cats can open doors; one of my cats can detect food in any packaging (sealed Jerky had been detected); one of my cats is very social with people. These three cats have totally different personalities. I miss them so much.
Our Zhan family continues to expand. Now we have 4 furry babies and 2 hooman babies. Shall we get more hooman babies? Hubby Jim wants 4, but I am not really sure. Giving birth is not fun.  My first baby is so naughty. I can't imagine having four kids like him in the house. I can already see this baby girl that I am having is going to be naughty, too. But guess what!? Jimmy's famous ancestor had 8 kids! CRAZY!
In the meantime, Iris loves to give dada big hugs! She is definitely beyond 120 pounds! She is really smart! She never jumps on me because she knows that I can't handle her.

Happy Days

Happy Days

Next week marks the last week of my second trimester. I am already so big, so I am not sure how big this time I will get. The hunger situation is real. I've been craving for peanut butter crackers and the chickens from Chick-fil-A. I have also learned to buy snacks on Amazon Fresh, which will be delivered right to my door. You see, I am expecting myself to be a chubby and clumsy mama bear soon again.

My son is still with his grandparents. He is so happy with his auntie Emma. They are having so much fun together. My baby is a naturally civil engineer. Well, he might have gotten his talent from his great great great great grandpa, Zhan Tianyou.  He can recognize shapes very well and put his blocks together without falling apart. He is a little boy of many talents just like his dada. I am very proud to be his mama.

Jimmy recently saved two baby sparrows from our backyard. We successfully hatched them and now we are officially their adoptive parents. Jimmy is really good at feeding the babies. I also learned how to take care of them while Jimmy is away. In the meantime, our dog is getting used to the big city. She is very gentle now. We can even walk her on the streets! Here we went for a walk in Duke. It is a quite decent Japanese garden we have nearby!

Still Surviving in this COVID World

June 29, 2021 0
Still Surviving in this COVID World

It has been so long since I wrote a post. I should be documenting my COVID life. Many things have been changed but I am still the busy me. We are currently living in Durham and the summer here is very hot for a New Yorker like me. I am getting used to it by the day and my body is finally accepting the 90+ degrees weather. My big dog is also here with us. Due to her size, many city folks are scared of her. The thing is…the more terrified they are, the more my dog wants to engage with them. We got a whole bunch of new gears to train her to behave like a city dog. Well, at least she learned to not bark while other dogs are barking in their rooms. I should award her for being the most peaceful dog because seriously, she sleeps way too much!

Wanna play?

In the meantime, my son is staying with his grandparents and is enjoying the much cooler summer in Canada. He is having so much fun with his auntie and made a lot of new friends in the community. It appears my son is super social and can get along with anyone! He is also very brave. When he falls, he doesn’t cry much. He gets up and checks his body. If nothing’s wrong, he moves on. Ok, I didn’t teach him that. That’s a God-given package!

Chasing the summer dreams

Another surprise! Well, it looks like I can’t keep surprises for too long hehe…Our baby number 2 will be here around our birthdays. The three of us will certainly have a big birthday party every year. We went to check on her today! She opened up her mouth and danced all the way through our ultrasound session. Guess, we will have an active girl in the house very soon. Alright, a new set of toys will be needed for the girl. We will buy barbies and a lot more barbies..hehe that was me when I was a baby. I loved my barbies!

Baby Cha dancing in my belly 😍

That’s all I have to say! I will update more soon! So many things are happening….

Son is Growing Fast

September 12, 2020 0
Son is Growing Fast

My baby has been growing fast.  His current favorite word is car. I guess our road trips back when he was just born helped him to love big trucks. The sound of them makes him happy. He can now say many words like hello, bye, apple, and banana.  He likes to imitate his little aunt, and he is definitely learning a lot from her. He can do some simple gymnastics flips. I am so proud of him!

Oh, here's me every time when I hear a new word from him! Omg, that feeling is indescribably happy!

Look who is reading about trucks. Just like his daddy who loves trucks so much!
He already wants to learn to drive. He will be my next taxi driver (after his dad retires). Muhaha.
I just can't resist his little happy face! He is definitely having a blast with his little auntie!
Look he also likes to help granny to keep her bathroom clean.
He loves his aunt and I think tennis will definitely be his sport!
I can't wait to spend more time with my baby son. He's such a happy baby and I will ensure that he will continue to be happy for the rest of his life. 😃
